HSBC/Reader's Digest promo

when I got home just a while ago, I noticed an HSBC envelope waiting for me, with the Reader's Digest logo this time. Apparently, it wasn't my monthly bill, but a promotion "for the very few selected loyal HSBC cardholders" where you can reply with the YES envelope (enclosed inside) to have the following advantages in return:

  • a subscription of the Reader's Digest magazine at the special price of P1596 for one year "which represents a significant saving of 17% on the current newsstand price"

  • a stylish Piercarlo D'alessio watch for FREE

  • an entry in the HP Mini PC Giveaway draw, with a chance to win an HP Mini 1000 Vivienne Tam Edition worth P33,900

  • an entry in the Customer Appreciation Prize draw, with a chance to win a Mitsubishi Eclipse GT

  • a chance to win maximum allocation of P6,750,000

  • It sounded really good. Mainly because the people here at home love Reader's Digest, we even used to subscribe to it years ago. And take note, there's the free watch (I've been planning to buy a wrist watch lately), the chance to win an HP laptop and millions of bucks! Though... when I was about to put everything required in the YES envelope, I realized that:

  • we lived for N years now without a Reader's Digest subscription, so we don't really need that

  • The watch didn't really look appealing. I mean, it's nice but it's not something I would buy once I decide to shop for a new wrist watch

  • I was never (AS IN NEVER) lucky in raffles. I can't even get those free umbrellas in christmas parties!

  • I don't really want an HP laptop. I've been rooting for Acer or MSI. I know someone who ranted in the past about his HP laptop -overheats plus he experienced REEEEAALLLY BAD SERVICE several times, it was enough to convince me that it is not a good brand at all

In the first place, I may not be "one of very few selected loyal HSBC cardholders". they could always send such letters to any cardholder right?

I was entertained though by the flowchart showing how I was luckily selected (and oh, it came with a sticker with label "TOP RANKING 2%" -sticker for my YES envelope so that handling will be given priority DAW) and by the nice sticker, on the main envelope & beside my address, with label "IMPORTANT. IMMEDIATE ATTENTION REQUIRED. TO BE SHOWN ON FRONT SIDE OF PACKAGE" which I tried to remove by my sharp nails out of my curiosity. and I was right, it's just a part of the envelope printing. on front side of the package. err so, props ba yun? what the hell was that for?

Hey I'm not saying this whole thing is evil... the deal is still good, but only when you really want the subscription and the free watch. It's not a good deal if you were just enticed by the packaging. OR it's 100% good, but they sent it at my most skeptic state. muhaha.

so there. I'm glad I salvaged my P1596. hehe.

same ere received the package yesterday. tried to research on the net and found your blog hahaha! we're the lucky 2%. My dad received reader's digest raffle few years ago, so i knew this already. He purchased books from reader's digest just to be one step closer to the dream car. Then it will make you purchase more as you get closer to the prize that you'll never get in the end. Nice promo though! i kept the key for souvenir lol hahahahay!

to all, i didn't mean to make it appear so bad. again the deal is still good, but only when you really want the subscription and the free watch.

    ayoko magtunog kontrabida. ehehee!

Actually tama c leydi. It's a great deal. Pero if you think wisely this is just their marketing/sales strategy. I also received this package yesterday. Nung una nga sabi ko. "Ano toh!! milyonaryo n ba ako?" I thought it was real nung nkita ko ung cheque with million pesos ang nakalagay. Nakaready na ung Yes envelope ko and eto nga, nagsearch muna ako sa net about this. Well if you will compute. if there are 100k na card holders of HSBC(which is maliit pa nga) 2% na qualified is 2000 cardholders. What if bigger pa sa 100k. Not bad for a watch. I will call HSBC to make sure na refundable. Un n lng cguro ggawin ko.

me too, just received an envelope today, ready to mail, i plan to call hsbc to confirm the promo, but i read your blog, buti nalang excited pa naman kmi. buti nalang my second thot pa. thanks.

wow onga noh, never thought of that! pero pde ba yun? parang lugi ata sila nun kase pinasok ka sa raffle tapos babawiin mo. but if pde yun, then that move is sulit. ahaha!

Just received one today... At first parang gusto ko, maganda talaga yung offer (may car key pa na kasama sa mail haha!), but when I saw Readers Digest's 2008 sweestakes winners, napaisip ako. Medyo hindi lang pala Philippines ang kasali.. (Mas bumaba ang chances lol!) Its a good thing that I found your blog for info.

Glad that I've found your blog..i also received one yesterday and plan to return the envelope today but i have second thoughts so nagsearch muna ako sa internet and... what do you know..ang dami pla nting kasama sa 2%..i've showed it to one of my officemates and he saw something - Per DTI-NCR Permit#4557 Series of 2008...2008? di ba dapat 2009? oh well i didn't know anything about sa mga promo mechanics n yan..so even if it is valid or not...some things are too good to be true...

    ledabrigino said...

yesterday I received one. i am interested on the book 1801 Home remedies. I know I'm so unlucky with any raffle draws but for sure, I want the book. My question is if this is legit. I'm searching HSBC with Reader's Digest's promo about this and I'm found this blog. I want the book, and I want to take my chances too. (Lolz) Just want to know if this is legit. I'll be tracking with this blog, keep it up guys.

    Hi Again :)

Super investigate talaga ko with this promo of HSBC...but have anyone tried "gugeling" (google search) the winners of the previous promo for the readers digest/sweepstakes? it was posted in their website too :)

    Anonymous said...

I also received a similar letter just today and immediately googled and found your blog. Seems a really enticing promo. According to an article here, the last winner is a guy from Cebu. He is so lucky being drawn from 2.1 million entries from Singapore, Hongkong, Taiwan and the Philippines.

    ledabrigino said...

cool, so someone actually won! well to begin with, this raffle's genuine naman.. like what i said, i'm jst not lucky in raffles kaya di ako kumagat... and yeah that winner is so lucky!

    Anonymous said...

    Got this same mail today.

@Thonongski: your private gift is printed at the bottom part of the private gift card. Mine is a "magnetic set" something and I wonder what it is. hehehe...

Putting my credit card number and mailing it do no seemed to be a good move for me. So I am letting this pass.

hahahah thanks for this. i think i'll go with the 1 month subscription tapos papaputol ko agad. lol i enjoyed reading the comments..:D

    Anonymous said...

i had my subscription and receive the 1st article, upon opening my envelope im expecting the watch voucher...but there's nothing. After a week received an apologize letter from readers digest that the watch was out of stock....
    really dissapointing!

    ledabrigino said...

whoa. and they will not give you a watch or an alternative or anything? at all? even after N days or weeks or months? they should, it's included in their "promo" package! otherwise you can tell that to DTI, I guess :D

(and hey, I thought this thread is already dead! haha!)

    pEDo said...

lol... this promotion is now at Metrobank. I just received mine last Thursday (04Feb2010). And everything you mentioned here in your blog is exactly the same with me.

Though looking at the <a ref="http://www.readersdigest.com.ph/rd/rdhtml/en/sweepstake/st_realwinner.jsp>reader's digest website</a>, they posted the 2009 winners of their raffle, which I still doubt if those listed winners are real person. :D

    Anonymous said...

    I got the watch, and i think it's cool...:D

    Anonymous said...

i also got the contest.they want me to subsribe reader's digest to get the watch n oppurtunity to win a peugot407.should i subsribe or not?

    ledabrigino said...

i really can't tell if subscribing is a good option.. since I never tried it. (this blog and its comments are kinda biased apparently.. hehe.) so.. try googlizing for forums/blogs about people who have tried it :)

Just got mine today. There was even an illustration on how i was selected. The enclosed key belongs to a BMW worth 3M. I want to give it a try but what worries me is giving them the details of my credit card. Do you think it's safe. I need to reply within seven days daw.

    ALAFIAHPREMIE said...

We're the same i got a key of a BMW worth 3M and I reply it already into a YES envelop every month I received the subscription and about sa watch nila totoo po pero hindir pier carlo ung binigay nila ano lang QUARTZ lang ung natanggap ko mukhang peki den kasi sa likod walang nakalagay kung saan ginawa ung relo, peki talaga. thanks i read this blog. hindi lang ako ang may top rank dami pala natin. Ngayong January 12 2012 daw ang draw nila. Tingnan ko kung totoo ba to. hehehehehe. Tanong ko lang sa sarili ko "bakit sila namimigay ng pera kung kulang sila nga mga subscribers, bitin talaga."
